Bunmi's 16th Letter from America

Hi Mum and Dad

It was great to hear your voices. As soon as the phone rang at midnight, I had a feeling it was mom and dad. It has been anxious times. As you well know, my student fellowship contract is over so, for the first time, the money from my adjunct duties will be my only means of sustenance. This semester’s class will be my first graduate level adjunct contract. Apart from the undergraduate adjunct contract, completed last spring, all the teaching assignments I’ve done so far were fellowship contractual duties. All I want to do is teach a great class and get the chance to implement some new ideas.

For example, I’ve designed this class so my students can use a new online tool we have called “voice boards.” The voice board allows us to post a recorded voice messages on a discussion board. In scriptwriting we have this thing we do called “pitching.” Like someone who gives a sales pitch in order to sell an item, a writer also needs to be able to pitch a story in order to sell the idea of the story to, perhaps, a potential investor. So I’m gearing up my class to be the first online scriptwriting students to pitch using blackboard -- we will see if it works.  Continue in next col. >>>

On the exam front, I’ve decided to postpone taking my final exams to next spring, which means I’ll be taking it in March 07 instead of October 06. Since, I’m done with classes now, the extra months will give me some more time to prepare and have my proposal for my dissertation ready before I even take the exam. I made the decision as the summer was coming to a close because it felt like I was rushing and juggling too many balls in the air at once. Now, all I have to do this semester is teach one distance class, prepare my proposal, finish up a project from an earlier class, and prepare for my exam.

Yinka called a few weeks back and informed me he won’t be coming to Virginia Beach this fall, as he had to return home immediately after the SIGN conference. I speak to Yemisi every other day since she arrived. Rotimi and Segun are fine – you need to see how tall Segun is!!!

Give my love to everyone.

Love and miss both of you very, very, very much.
