My athletics trip

By Moyin Oloruntoba

On the first day of athletics, I had to wake up at 4:30am. The lights were off, so I had to get ready without lights, go pick a friend of mine (Sarah) and then off we went to our school. We were the first to reach the school.

At the beginning of the year, we had an inter-school sports day. Then in the third term a teacher called the students who qualified for the sports day. We were only eight students who qualified, that’s small. Sarah and I left for Bloemfontein with our principal. It took us an hour and a half to get to get there. When we got there, we had to sit down and get ready for our item. We sat at the pavilion and waited for some people to call out our item. I was doing 100m, 1200m and long jump. At the end of the day I qualified in 100m and long jump. And for that I got to go to Durban.

In Durban it was hot but not as hot as Nigeria. Durban is the hottest place in South Africa. I went with the secretary of our school, with her husband and her two daughters (The Fishers). It took us eight hours to get to Durban. I stayed in a hotel called Road Lodge. I did not stay in the hotel with the Fishers but with the other students from my school who were competing. There were 800 people competing mostly from South Africa. Some were from Botswana. It was very hard in 100m and I came 6th and in long jump I came 4th.The next day I went to the beach with the Fishers and had a wonderful time. Before I forget, it was my first time in Durban and it was lovely.
