My best holiday ever...

By Moyin Oloruntoba

The best holiday I’ve ever had started on the 29th of December 2001. I went with my mother and my two sisters, Modupe and Morenike; my father was on call so he could not come. We went with a family called the Rushton’s, Mr. and Mrs. Rushton, their four children, two boys and two girls. The oldest is boy called Gerard, the second a girl called Carolyn, the third is a boy called Daniel and the last a girl called Bernice. There were two older girls, Lily, Palesa and two other boys, Chimme and Bomby. We went to Johannesburg with two cars, our car and the Rushtons car. Our first stop was at an Engen rest stop. The adults sat down while the children played and bought a lot of sweets.

It took us six hours to get there. We went to Mrs. Rushton’s mothers house, which was a farm-camp called HAPPY ACRES and an animal display. There were lots of beautiful hairy cats, snakes, rabbits to feed the snakes, a big plant house with lots of plants, a misery mill house. It was quite an educational camp. We arrived there at 7:00pm; ate dinner and went to sleep. The girls slept in the vine cottage while the boys slept in another room, which was far away from the girl’s room.

The following morning at 8:00 we ate oats and toast for breakfast. After breakfast we played around the camp, boys playing with boys and girls playing with girls. After that all the children wore their swimming suits and got into the swimming pool. Bernice and Morenike were sitting at the edge splashing.

When Morenike saw Gerard and Chimme dive into the water, she also dived in. even though she doesn’t know how to swim. Gerard quickly swam towards Morenike and I dived into the water too and got there at the same time, and helped her up. From that time she did not go back she just stuck to splashing. We continued swimming for thirty minutes then got out and dressed up.

After lunch at 1:00 we rested, played cards then went for ice-skating. A lot of us did not know how to ice-skate. Only Gerard knew how to ice-skate. Gerard and Chimme (Chimme did not know how to ice-skate) got on the ice- ring. Gerard taught Chimme and after a while he was like an expert. While that was happening Carolyn and I were trying to get the hang of it on our own. Gerard and his Dad came to help us. Gerard held my hand and Mr. Rushton held Carolyn’s. When were going very well and they left us to go on our own. Carolyn and I separated and I went around the rink without touching a thing. We spent an hour ice-skating. After ice-skating we went back home and went back to the swimming pool. Then after swimming we ate dinner.

On the 31st of December we went to church after church we ate then we went to cable cars’. Whaoooo, it was bumpy at first but it was fun as we continued. We saw sky-divers taking off on top of the mountain where the cable car took us. It was beautiful seeing them take off.

Now back to Happy Acres, we went swimming at a lake within the camp. We had a fun game there - we had two ropes to hold on to and one to walk on. We had to jump into water in the middle and it was fun. After all that, we went back home and we told our dad all about it. You ought to plan to visit HAPPY ACRES.

That’s all for now, Bye.
