UPDATE NEWS

September, 2005

This newsletter is circulated to our visitors and others who have made a direct subscription or application to be included in our mailing list. We also sometimes include people we've reacted with and think they may like the newsletter. If you have been inadvertently included in the list and you want your address removed, read the instructions at the end of this page on how to.

Dear Family Members, Friends and Visitors,

HELLO. We have a new update newsletter for you again. After doing a good revision of the pages in the archive with regards to the validation of the Links, we made substantial new additions to the main site as listed here under:

OUR PHOTO GALLERY

Our Photo Gallery continues to grow. We now have six collections of thirty-five pictures. The latest collection is #5 which is a continuation of "A peep into the family albums," Some family members said they were surprised to find their old pictures in the collections and asked for copies as they have lost their own prints. Needless to say that we have a box full of these old pictures and will show-off some of them here.

OUR UNDER 18s FORUM

Moyin Oloruntoba, the editor of the Under 18s Forum has relocated form Lesotho to South Africa with her parents. We all, in the family, wish Moyin and her parents and sisters a happy sojourn in South Africa.

WEB RINGS

WebRings are good for attracting visitors to our site but we sometimes get funny and naughty comments like this from a guy who said "It is unfortunate that you put "Nigerian" in the title of your site as, in these days of spam and scams, Nigerian conjures up a wicked picture of con artists, etc. You might want to use the word "African" rather in your site title. I know you're proud of your heritage, BUT, wrong perception can harm just about anything. Thanks for listening."

We replied as follows:

Thanks ...

"The world knows too much of Nigerian scammers or "419" and very little of the other good sides of my country. One of the aims of our website is to correct some of that perception."

COMPUTING FOR FUN

Computing for Fun section has a new article which you should read. It is titled “Enhance your email (or Better emailing)”. The article said in part: To have an email account is not enough. How do you use your email? Is it just for the casual communications with friends, family members and a few contacts here and there? Have you thought about the power of this facility and its great potentials as a social, business, and marketing tool? Here are some hints on how to enhance the power of your email usefully and profitably for personal and business communications.

ARTS AND CULTURE

In the Arts and Culture section we have a story titled “Festac 77 Mask”. Festac means 'Festival of Arts and Culture'. It was mainly a Black Africa event, and only two Festacs have been held so far. The first one in Senegal was in 1966 and the second and biggest in Nigeria was held in 1977. The mask that symbolised the Nigerian event was recently donated to UNESCO by the Nigerian President. This story reveals the secret of the mask.

SEARCH THE WEB

Our search engines are very useful in our day-to-day work on the Internet and they could be of help to you too. For example, shortly after the launching of the space craft DISCOVERY, we searched the Internet effectively for details of the launch, the problems encountered, and the excitement of the return to earth - using all the four search engines -  AskJeeves, Yahoo Search, Google and  Answers.com.

Yahoo and Google are excellent sources of news, while Ask Jeeves and Answer.com are good online Encyclopaedia, Thesaurus, Dictionary of Definitions and more. We love them all.

TIME AND MONEY

Elizabeth and I can never remember the time in the different time zones around the world. To avoid waking people up from their sleep, we use an Internet World Wide Service before ringing any of our friends and family members living abroad. Here is how it works.

To call Nairobi (Kenya) for example, click this URL:  http://www.onyoursite.com/wwc/ , select Kenya and click "Get Time". Kenya will be shown as  precisely two (2) hours ahead of Nigeria; South Africa is one (1) hour ahead, and US Eastern is five (5) hours behind us in the summer.

Similarly, those of you living abroad and ourselves too, often want to know what some foreign currencies are worth in Naira. Here is a utility we found on the Internet and sure you'll like it.

To convert your currency to any of the many currencies of different countries, click this URL:  http://www.onyoursite.com/cxc/ and follow the directions on the screen. We like this utility best because it converts foreign currencies into Nigerian Naira (NGN). For example, if you enter $8,000 (US dollar) for conversion to Naira you get instantly, NGN1054,480.6400. (one million, fifty four thousand four hundred and eighty naira and sixty four kobo). Wow, with just 8,000 US dollar you can become a Naira millionaire!

There are many similar utilities on the Internet, but these ones are very accurate and dependable.  Bookmark the URLs and go there any time you like or visit our website to use them.

LETTERS FROM USA 14 (Delayed. Coming up soon!)

Visitors are familiar with the series "Letters from USA" which are sent in periodically by Bunmi Oloruntoba who is still working on his PhD at Regent University, Virginia Beach. Early this month, Yinka Oloruntoba attended a medical conference in the US and took time to visit Bunmi on his campus. It was a great reunion as you can read from this edition of "Letters from USA."
