The Senior Convention

By Moyin Oloruntoba

On the 19th of November 2003 (a Wednesday), I attended  the All-African Sr. Convention (A.A.S.C) in Bloemfontein. Bloemfontein, (the city of flowers) is the capital of the Orange Free State, South Africa. This convention is only for Accelerated Christian Education Schools. (A.C.E.)  There were one thousand three hundred and fifty students this year.

Anyway we left after school at around one o’ clock, there were nineteen of us (including me) and we left with three of our teachers. We got there at around three, checked our hostels, put our luggage down, got our passport to say we had done our inspection and were ready for the convention. At around five thirty we went for supper and after that we went for the opening rally. There was music playing in the back ground as the crowd filled the hall. Our rally Was from about 7:30 to 10:00. Then it was lights out at 10:30.

On Thursday the 20th , our first item was our group dance, we were excited about it, but we performed our dance excellently. We came 4th in it. Some people did their singing some did solos, duets, trios, but none of them got a place. Everyone that entered the sr. convention from our school (Yeshua College) took part in the ensemble and we came 4th.  That took the whole day because the songs and dances were spaced out, plus breakfast, lunch and supper. At around seven thirty the hall was filled because of the evening rally. At the evening rally we sang songs and there was a man called the chocolate man, he always called out six students to do weird things and they got chocolate if they did it. Then came some announcements and then the scripture awards. There were awards for saying the whole of psalms, the whole of the four gospels and for saying proverbs and acts, but what they do is say ten verses a week until they finished the books.

On Friday the 21st, was our One Act Play, dance drama, and the boys soccer kick.

In our one act play we did not get a place and in our dance drama we were disqualified because our costumes had an eye, which was a symbol of a god and the costume of the devil was actually a god and they were not Christian.  With the soccer kick, we did not get a place but there was disaster because a boy hit a beehive and then the bees were really angry. They attacked one lady, we don’t know why but they just kept attacking her. A lot of people were stung by them. Some of our boys were also stung. The lady I was telling you about was stung by one thousand bees and she was sent to the hospital along with two other people.

Saturday the 22nd  was the last day of the competitions & I was to perform my dance drama solo and the soccer match. With my dance drama solo I came 3rd and won a bronze medal and with the soccer match we came 4th out of 18 different schools.  We spent the whole day at the soccer field . At five thirty, we went for our supper and then went to our hostels and got ready for the evening rally.

On Sunday, the last day of our convention, the 23rd  was the prize giving. The prize giving started at around nine and ended at around twelve. After that we said goodbye to the lovely friends we had made from different schools, took our packed lunches and headed home.

I will give the senior convention of 2003, 100% and hope to go next year again.

P.S.  If you get over 90% in what you performed excluding dancing and soccer, you get to go to the international convention in America. By the way this was my first year at the senior convention and I hope to go again.

 Bye for now.
